Do knitting patterns look like another language to you?  Well, here is a brief translation of some of those funny abbreviations.  It’s by no means exhaustive, but it will at least unlock the mystery to the patterns offered on FemiKnitz.com!

Standardized Abbreviations

beg: begin(ning)

BO: bind off

CC: contrasting color

CO: cast on

cont: continue

dec: decrease

dpn: double pointed needles

felt(ing) or full(ing): a process of washing wool or wool-blend yarn in hot water and with a special kind of soap in order to transform wool into felt-like material.  (See our femiknitz yahoo group for more)

foll: following

g: grams

Gart st: garter stitch—when knitting back and forth, knit every row.  When knitting in the round, knit 1 row, purl 1 row.

inc: increase(ing)—done either by knitting in the front and the back of the next stitch or picking up yarn between stitches and making a new stitch.

k: knit

k2tog: knit two stitches together

MC: main color

m1: make 1 stitch—same as inc

p: purl

p2tog: purl 2 stitches together

patt: pattern

psso: pass slipped stitch over

rem: remaining

rep: repeat

RS: right side of work—meaning the side that everyone sees

rnd: round

ssk: slip two stitches knit-wise, then knit the two stitches together

ssp: slip two stitches purl-wise, then purl the two stitches together

sl: slip

sl st: slip stitch

st(s): stitch(es)

St st: stockinette stitch—when knitting back and forth, knit 1 row, purl one row.  When knitting in the round, knit every row.

tog: together

WS: wrong side of work—meaning the side that you don’t want people to see

YO: yarn over
