Skills needed: Knit, purl, knitting in the round on double pointed needles, K2tog

This hat was designed for a baby named Andrew who was born with a heart defect.  He needs extra love and comfort to keep him strong, not to mention knitted gifts to keep him feeling warm and protected.  The yarn for this project was purchased from www.handpaintedyarn.com, but any bulky weight yarn will work.

for a 3-6 month old baby

Gauge: 4.5 sts and 6 rows = 1 inch in St st

Materials:
Any Bulky weight yarn that knits to gauge, I skein MC and 1 skein CC
(Model made with oceanos wool [MC] and verde merino [CC] from handpaintedyarn.com)

1 set US 10/6mm DP needles
Tapestry needle

 
Directions:
With CC, CO 61 and work in the round.
Work in seed/moss stitch for 10 rows.
last stitch - k2tog (60 stitches)

Change to MC and continue working in the round.
K4, P2 for about 4 inches.
Begin Dec rows:
Row 1:*k2tog, 10 sts in rib pattern* (rep 6 times)
Row 2:*k2tog, 8 sts in rib pattern* (repeat 6 times)
Row 3:*k2tog, k6* (repeat 6 times)
Row 4:*k2tog, k4* (rep 6 times)
Row 5 (and foll):*k2tog, k2* (repeat until there are only 4 sts left on needles)
thread yarn through holes and cinch. Weave in all ends.
